Cave Idea / Presentation

After participating in the escape room, we've all had to come up with a different idea and make it into a presentation, which we'd then pitch against each other, and vote on which ones we liked the most. The top two would get picked and the class getting separated into 2 so we can work on them.

I've had the idea for a long time now to create a game based around caves, and the unknown horrors that are within them. My idea for the game is that you and a group of friends go down into a cave to explore it, trying to figure out why it was abandoned. Eventually you stumble upon the ruins of an ancient city deep unground and have to figure out how to escape, as you feel like you are not alone down there.

The game is going to be based around a trust mechanic with different NPC's that accompany you. You've all been falling out a little but need to figure out how to leave regardless. If you do things with all of them and keep them happy, then you should all be able to escape together. However if you go the easy route and keep on choosing one friend, or decide to do it all yourself, they might be less hesitant to help you when it's really important.

The different puzzles and challenges you might face down there could be:

Crossing a dangerous gap

De-cyphering runes/symbols on a wall

Finding/Maintaining a light source

Small crawl spaces

Chases

Timed events

I'm basing my game mainly off two things I've seen/played. The game I'm basing it off would be The Forest, specifically the cave sections which i thought would always work so well as just a solo cave exploring game. Another bit of inspiration I'm taking is from the move The Descent, which details a group of friends going down into a cave and needing to leave once they find creatures down there which will kill them.

My idea actually ended up being one of the idea's that got picked, I'm now currently talking with my group about how we are going to approach making the game, and if everything i want to put into it as actually possible, since it's a very ambitious idea for us as a small development team. It's made me realize that i haven't exactly thought about the details of my idea too well, and we're currently talking about how we could make it a bit easier and maybe simplify the idea.

After some talking for a few days we've decided to just remove the NPC idea, but say that you're going down after some friends which already went down without you, you're worried that they haven't contacted you in a while, so you're going down to find them yourself. The idea if that you'll enter, do some puzzles that allow you to go deeper, and then eventually stumble upon the ruins of some sort of ancient city. We're gonna say that you'll find creatures down there that eventually chase you but we're not sure what sort of creatures as of now.

We've had a few more lessons to write down some of the idea's for what we want the game to look like, the different puzzles and creatures we want to be in it:

Idea's for game (Reworked):

Cave idea narrative:

Whilst exploring with a group of young friends (around 16-18), you follow a path which is supposed to be closed to the public, which leads to a set of ancient caves/ruins. Your friends hand you a walkie talkie to talk to you as you explore. You wander in and after doing a few things (This could work as the tutorial for picking things up, interacting etc) which they tell you to do, you ask to get out. When you try go the way you came in, but you only find a wall of stone and rubble in its place. Your friends tell you that it’s still there but you cant seem to find it. This leads to you exploring the cave more and wondering if you’ve gone the wrong direction, which soon leads you into the ruins/city.

Cave Mechanics:

When you go in, you will have to solve a puzzle involving runes and opening a door, this will lead you into different pathways which will eventually lead to the city. When you enter the city you will look around and find different numbers, noting them down for later use. You will also be able to pick up a flashlight and axe during different times in the game, using both to solve puzzles and defend yourself.

Creature:

The creatures that chase you are going to be known as "Skin-Walkers", these creatures are able to take on the different looks of your friends and mimic their voices, which will confuse you as you slowly lose the ability to talk with your friends via the walkie talkie, and you're getting deeper and deeper. They'll stand in the distance and make you think that you're nearly out, driving you to get closer before chasing after you and killing you.
